AI makes cheating easier

For as long as most of us have been alive, a written assignment did two jobs at once. It produced a piece of work, and it produced evidence that a particular child had sat down and thought. The second job was the point. The essay was never really about the essay.

A tool that returns a finished, fluent, correctly structured piece of writing in about twenty seconds pulls those two jobs apart. The work can now arrive without the thinking behind it, and it arrives looking exactly like the version that took four evenings. If that feels like the ground moving under something you understood, it is because the ground moved.

Noticing this before schools have finished responding to it is not alarmism. Most of us learned to read a child's progress partly from what came home in the bag, and that signal is weaker than it was. Nobody has handed out a replacement.

Students use these tools to produce work they did not do. Surveys disagree on how many, and self-reported numbers are shaky in both directions, but no serious account of the last few years suggests this is rare. It is safe to assume it happens at your child's school, because it does.

A take-home written assignment is much weaker evidence of understanding than it was three years ago. That holds whether or not your own child uses anything. The person marking it cannot tell from the page, so the page carries less weight for everyone in the class.

Teachers are being asked to police this with very little support. Most have had no training, no agreed standard for what counts as allowed help, and no dependable way to check. Many are making the judgment alone, at the point of marking, on a Sunday evening.

The part worth being plain about is not the rule. It is that writing is one of the ways thinking gets built. Choosing what to argue, hunting for the sentence that says it, noticing halfway through that you believe something slightly different — that is the work. A child who hands that over has not saved time on the task; they have skipped the thing the task existed to build.

This is not mainly a point about honesty, though a school will treat it as one. It is practical. The capability was going to come from the struggle, and the struggle is what got skipped. A parent worried about that is worried about the right thing.

What a fair assessment system looks like now is genuinely unknown. Moving everything into the classroom favors students who perform well under time pressure and disadvantages those who need quiet, or more time, or a language they are still learning. Keeping take-home work means accepting that some of it will not be the student's own. Every proposal on the table trades one unfairness for another, and nobody has shown their working.

Whether a ban can be enforced is a separate open question. A rule that cannot be checked is not quite a rule; it is a test of which students follow rules. A school that bans these tools outright and cannot verify compliance may be sorting its students by compliance rather than by learning, and it has no way to find out.

There is also a question that gets asked too rarely. If schools begin assuming every student has a capable assistant at home, homework quietly re-sorts itself around who has a device, a connection, a paid subscription and an adult with time. The students most likely to be flagged by an unreliable detector are often the same students, and nobody has fixed that.

A parent who reads all of this and decides their child will not use these tools for schoolwork has reached a legitimate conclusion, and an informed one. It is a decision that holds up better, and is easier to explain to a thirteen-year-old, when it comes from knowing how the tools work and where the arguments genuinely sit — which is a different thing from deciding because the whole subject is unfamiliar.
