What the wording changes

Before the example

It is not looking anything up

When you type a question into one of these tools, nothing goes off to find the answer. The model continues from the words you gave it, predicting piece by piece what a good reply to exactly those words would look like. That is the whole mechanism.

So what you typed is not a search term. It is the instruction, including every part you left out. Leave out who it is for and it picks an audience. Leave out how long and it picks a length. It fills each gap smoothly and without mentioning it, which is why the gaps stay invisible until you read what came back.

One task, three prompts

Explaining photosynthesis to a nine-year-old

A nine-year-old has come home wanting to know how plants eat, and you would like something better to say than “they just do.” Below is that one task written three ways, with what each version actually produced. The answers are captured rather than generated as you read: the comparison is the point, and it only teaches anything if it holds still.

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae and certain bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy stored as sugars.

It occurs in the chloroplasts, where chlorophyll absorbs light and drives the splitting of water molecules.

The energy carriers this produces power the Calvin cycle, which fixes carbon dioxide into three-carbon compounds.

The overall reaction consumes carbon dioxide and water and releases oxygen as a by-product.

None of that is wrong. It answered the question you asked, which was not the question you had: you wanted something to say at the kitchen table, and “tell me about” asks for an encyclopaedia entry.

The useful part of a prompt is usually the constraint at the end. Naming the audience changes how the answer sounds. The last clause changes what you are left holding when it finishes.

Look closely

Now read the good one properly

Here is that third answer again, asked on a different day, with one extra line. It has exactly the shape the prompt bought: three steps, then something to go and do. Three of these six lines will not survive checking. Tap the ones you would look up before you send her outside.

Step 1: the roots drink water from the soil and send it up the stem to the leaves.
Step 3: sunlight lets the leaf turn the water and the gas into sugar, and the leftover oxygen goes back out into the air.
Then ask her whether the same weed grows taller in the sunny corner of the garden or the shady one.

What to take away

Three things to carry into the next prompt

Name the audience and the format. Who is it for, and what should it look like when it lands — three steps, one paragraph, a list of questions. Left unsaid, both get chosen for you, and they get chosen for an average reader rather than for your child.
Put the constraint at the end. “…then give me two questions she could test in the garden” is the clause that turned something to read into something to do. It is usually the last thing you write and the most useful thing on the line.
A better prompt improves the shape, not the truthfulness. Clearer wording buys you the right length, the right reading age, the right format, and leaves the facts exactly as reliable as they were. You still check it — and for anything you would act on, you check it somewhere else.
